The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) offers research grants to support eligible graduate student research activities. All research grant applications must be reviewed and approved by the student’s sponsoring department before submission to GSA.
Who’s Eligible?
Graduate and Professional students from the Graduate College of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln who are enrolled at the time of application.
- Applicants must be enrolled in a degree program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and be in good academic standing.
- All travel must be completed before graduation.
- Students are eligible to receive up to one travel award per academic year. However, they may apply multiple times, provided they submit only one application per semester (e.g., Fall or Spring). Previous awardees will be considered secondary to first-time applicants.
- Applicants who have requested and received a refund for the University Program and Facilities Fee (UPFF) Fund A during the current or previous semester shall not be eligible to apply for or receive the Chancellor's Graduate Research Grant.
GCRG Application
Funded research activities and expenditures must occur during the following periods:
Fall awards: August 18th–December 31st
Spring awards: January 1st–May 31st
Departments and applicants will be notified of award decisions by October 1st for fall grants and March 1st for spring grants.
The Research Activity Grant follows the same description and reimbursement procedures as the Travel Awards, with two key differences: this grant is not for conference travel. Instead, it provides funding for research projects that directly support the completion of a Master’s or PhD degree.
The application is available on a rolling basis until the funds are exhausted or deadline is reached.
Examples of allowable expenses include:
- Compensation for research participants
- Purchase of eligible items or materials necessary to complete a research project
Each student may receive up to $300 to cover eligible expenses. Applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and a list of allowable expenses will be provided once your application is accepted.

GCRG Reimbursement
Please note that the reimbursement process for the Chancellor’s Grant has changed.
Reimbursements will now be processed directly through the recipient’s academic department, rather than through the Graduate Student Assembly (GSA).
Students who receive a Chancellor’s Grant award must coordinate all approved travel purchases and expenses directly with their sponsoring department. GSA and Student Life Business Services will not reimburse students for purchases made independently of their department.
Following completion of the approved travel and the conclusion of the applicable grant period, Student Life Business Services will transfer the awarded funds directly to the sponsoring department. Departments are responsible for retaining all required purchasing and expense documentation in accordance with University procedures.
Additional information and guidance regarding the updated reimbursement process will be provided as it becomes available. Students are encouraged to monitor GSA communications for updates and consult their academic department with any questions regarding reimbursement procedures.
